Good Ideas versus the Talent Deficit: View from the Valley

If you're wondering about the future of Silicon Valley over the long-term, listen to Dan Gillmor, the Technology Columnist for the San Jose Mercury News, commenting on start-up companies:

Venture capitalists in the valley are perpetually complaining that they can't find enough good managers or technical people for the companies they seed. This is partly because the start-ups insist on being here (or, in some cases, because investors insist that the companies be here). So companies raid each other for good people and then bitterly complain about worker shortages.

In one area there's definitely a talent deficit. The kind of person who can manage people, think fast and make excellent decisions on the fly is rare, because he or she has an indefinable element of instinct that no amount of schooling or experience can guarantee. And that kind of person is just what technology start-ups need.

Start-ups frequently are run by people who were perfect in a high-level, non-CEO job at an established company, on the odd principle that they've earned a shot at the chief executive's office. Sometimes it works. Often it doesn't.

If you're looking for help in executive selection, executive coaching or performance management, Gerard & Associates can help you identify, develop and manage the people you need to make your ideas a reality. Call us at (408) 776-9231.

Rapid, Customized Executive Assessment Package

Our most popular new service package is a rapid, customized approach to assessing the developmental needs of your management team in both technical/business and leadership/management areas. We have found that self-awareness is critical to efforts of building executive communities.

Benefits to Managers

Our assessment includes both face-to-face interviews and one-on-one feedback reports that permit each manager to:

a) (short-term) make immediate, positive adjustments to their management skills and style, team contributions and achievement of their short-term business goals through concrete and specific recommendations that emerge from the assessment and

b) (long-term) to have a clear long-term “road map” for specific ways of improving their overall management skills, collaborative methods and leadership capabilities. This road map may include recommendations for management behavior changes, different approaches to team-building and performance management, improved contributions to your firm's leadership team, coaching, mentoring, further management studies in specific areas and directed independent reading.

Benefits to Your Organization

Completion of this project will provide our client organizations with:

1) Highly reliable and customized-to-your-firm feedback for each of the managers who are assessed in this project by providing specific feedback on their individual strengths in key leadership competencies as well as developmental needs;

2) A customized tool and process for coaching and developing your managers;

3) After completion of this project, this same tool can be included as one of the steps to assist you in selecting future managers by predicting success according to your firm’s competency criteria; and

4) Finally, the overall results of this project can be used by your firm’s Training Department to accurately diagnose the exact training needs of your entire management team and thus, plan and deliver management training that precisely matches their needs.

This approach is currently being utilized with great success by clients who are moving toward the “virtual corporation model", technologically-oriented and poised for rapid growth in emerging markets.
